Mary Elaine's Story
Four years ago I married Dan Helix--a Perfect Match.com success story! I refer to myself as Mary Elaine now (not Elaine) but otherwise I don't think I have changed much!! We have 5 kids ages 17-21 (blended) and my baby, a very fluffy American Eskimo, Snowy, and live in Concord CA. My son William lives with my parents (still in the same house in Cowan Heights) and goes to school at UTI studying auto electronics; my daughter, Elise, is a marine biology major at the University of Hawaii. Dan's oldest, Zachary, lives with us and goes to community college, Candace lives near Sacramento and is majoring in Literature; and Spencer will be a senior in high school.
I have 31 years with the government as a marine biologist with the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. I work out of Oakland but my home office is in Camarillo and that is where I lived and raised my kids until I married Dan. My primary job is to develop and manage research contracts for biological and chemical studies in relation to effects from offshore oil and gas platforms, and offshore wind and wave energy production. One of my favorite efforts is managing a large partnership of universities and agencies that monitor rocky intertidal habitats on both coasts, go to MARINe dot gov. pt a roof over our heads as I was a single mom for a decade.
Dan planted a a small, non-denominational church 7 years ago in Concord called Awakenings Christian Church. As he is the Pastor, we are both very active with different ministries in the church. Dan served in the army as an artillery officer which left him with a drinking problem--he has been in recovery for 15 years-- and this is the basis of his calling. Our ministry focuses on reaching folks in recovery from life's issues, including drugs, alcohol and abuse, and folks that simply felt judged out of church for whatever reason. He is very active with the veteran community serving as the national commander for the US Volunteers, an organization who serve to ensure every vet receives final military honors at their funeral. He also has a radio program that airs twice a week geared at helping the church community address the needs of vets. In his spare time he plays competitive tennis and enjoys baseball.
I still sing, as I have though the years, dabble in art, flower arranging and interior design and travel a lot for business. We are looking forward to all the kids being out and on their own and making a good life for themselves, though I don't think either of us will slow down much even so. Our parents, all four of them, are all still living and in reasonable health, for which we are grateful.
